About surface density

Covering film is rated by surface density (weight per unit area), not total weight. Common spec units are oz/sq yd (iron-on films like Monokote, Ultracote) and g/sq m (European and metric-spec films). This tool lets you compare films across spec sheets, or measure an unlabeled scrap to identify its weight class.

For reference: lightweight heat-shrink films typically run 1.5–2.5 oz/sq yd (51–85 g/sq m). Heavier iron-on films range from 2.5–4.0 oz/sq yd (85–136 g/sq m).
