  • StevensAero - 1911 Caudron Racer Laser Cut, Micro RC Kit

Fall 2013 (October) Micro Builder Program Model.  This quarter we venture back to 1911 and explore the diminutive Caudron monoplane. Our scale rendition of this 1911 racer is simple enough for the novice to build yet offers loads of scale detail opportunity for more advanced modelers.

    Background:

We know you will enjoy this little vintage number ripped from the pages of the May 11, 1912 edition of Flight magazine and now offered in kit form ready to patrol your school yard or gymnasium.  The 1911 Caudron monoplane designed by René Caudron was first flown in December 1911 and competed in the 1912 Aerial Derby.  The design featured simple wood and fabric construction, absurdly small wings, and was fitted with the latest from Anzani, a 45 h.p. prototype 6 cylinder radial.  With the Anzani motivating the lightweight airframe, a 1911 Caudron could really move out and was noted to cross the channel "at a speed of not less than ninety-five miles per hour".

    Kit Features:

Our rendition of this pioneering design retains the slender lines and profile that net the model a delightfully smooth feel.  This model is perfectly at home within the confines of the local gymnasium or the field behind your chateau.   Ample dihedral, generous washout, and appropriate flying surface volume equal great stability that will allow your mind to wander into the cockpit and back in time as you pilot this splendid craft on those dawn and dusk patrols of the local weed patch.

Characterised by our signature engineering that produces a superb fit and logical assembly, even the novice builder can have a completed airframe ready in one - two evenings.  In addition to thoughtful step-by-step photo illustrated instructions, we go out of our way to hand select the finest AAA balsa and hardwoods for your 1911 Caudron kit and provide a logical assortment of scale details and hardware components that allow you to produce an impressive example of this flying classic.  We encourage advanced builders add thier own finishing touches and have provided pre-cut scale rigging points and fabricated balsa wheel covers for the optional 1-1/2" spindle wheels [DUB150ML].

    Kit Includes:

    • Precision laser cut parts
    • Full size plan set
    • Photo illustrated step-by-step assembly instructions

  • StevensAero - 1919 Avro 534 "Baby" Laser Cut, Micro RC Kit

Spring 2014 (April) Micro Builder Program model

    Background:

Perhaps the sweetest little biplane ever manufacuterd by Avro.  The 1919 534 Baby was an aerial pioners dream machine with wooden construction and rag covered (canvas) wings.  The Baby's first successful flight was in May of 1919.  The Avro 534 featured a water-cooled in-ine Green C.4 and spurred many design variants from water plane to clipped wing aerial derby racer and even an expedition model for use at the Antarctic.  We chose to model Bert Hinklers, beloved G-EACQ which is perhaps the most famous example of the Avro Baby setting many distance and derby records for it's time.  Bert, a pioneer Australian aviator, remarked that the Avro 534 was his favorite airplane.

Our version of the Avro 534 has been designed using our pioneering laser cutting techniques and interlocking construction methods and is quick building and simple to fly.  Each kit is thoughtfully manufactured in Colorado, U.S.A. from hand sorted AAA grade balsa sourced through state side mills and backed with a comprehensive hardware package, step-by-step photo illustrated instruction manual, and the best design know how in the kit manufacturing business.  Developed to accept popular micro electronics from ParkZone and E-Flite the Avro Baby is certain to delight!

  • StevensAero - 1919 Ricci Triplane UM

Summer 2015 (July) Micro Builder Program model

    Background:

There is not a lot of information available on this quirky little design. What attracted us to it as a potential model design was a wonderful line drawing that we had stashed away in our future projects file. A search of the internet yielded some additional information including a few photos.

Lifelong Italian aviation enthusiasts, brothers Umberto and Ettore Ricci, started their aviation careers with rigid hot-air airship models and free flight gliders, designed and built in their youth. They went on to design huge flying boats, and a series of small aircraft, conceived as flying motorcycles. The Ricci Triplane is one of these designs.  The 10-foot, 7-inch wing span aircraft, was powered by a six-cylinder Anzani engine that could propel the plane through the sky at approximately 78 miles per hour. The lovely little triplane was built for a competition of small light aircraft, held in 1919, it came in behind a few other competitors, including the little Breda Pensuti Triplane.

Although The Ricci Triplane is largely forgotten today, it can still take to the skies – in model form at least. The Stevens AeroModel Ricci Triplane UM features a modern kit design that builds trouble-free and quickly, thanks to modern design processes, pioneered by Stevens AeroModel.

  • StevensAero - 1928 Pietenpol Sky Scout UM

Spring 2015 (April) Micro Builder Program model

    Background:

The Pietenpol Sky Scout UM was designed as a lower-cost, follow-up to the enormously popular Air Camper, Bernie Pietenpol’s first homebuilt design. A less expensive (at the time) Ford Model T engine was used, rather than the more current Ford Model A engine of the time. The aircraft was redesigned to use the heavier, lower-powered engine by making it to a single-seat aircraft. The new location for the pilot required a section called a "flop" to be installed in the wing.  Essentially, a section of the wing was hinged up to allow the pilot to stand up when getting into and out of the aircraft.

The original drawings were published in the 1933 issue of Mechanix Illustrated Magazine.  Designed to be built out of spruce, plywood and fabric, by the aviation enthusiast, many versions of this popular aircraft were built, and are still being built today.

Relive the excitement of the golden age of aviation with our ultra-micro version of this famous aircraft.
The Stevens AeroModel kit offers a modern kit design that builds trouble-free and quickly, thanks to modern design processes, pioneered by Stevens AeroModel.

  • StevensAero - C-180 "Say's Nuh!" Laser Cut, Micro RC Kit

Winter 2015 (January) Micro Builder Program model

    Background:

The C-180 ”Say’s-nuh” is a four or six-seat, fixed-gear, general aviation aircraft. Produced between 1953 and 1981, though no longer in production, many are still in use today as personal aircraft, and in utility roles such as charter and recreational uses.

In 1952 the Cessna aircraft company introduced the C-180 Skywagon as a complement to its popular C-170. The prototype first flew on May 26, 1952, with Cessna test pilot William D. Thompson at the controls.

In all its versions, 6,193 Cessna C-180s were built. In 1956, a tricycle-gear version of the design was introduced as the Cessna C-182. Additionally, in 1960, Cessna introduced a heavier, more powerful version of the 180, the Cessna 185. For a time, all three versions of the design were in production.

Cessna C-180s produced between 1953 and 1963 have two side windows, while 1964 to 1981 models feature three side windows, as they use the same fuselage as the Cessna C-185. Cessna C-180s can be equipped with floats and skis.

The Cessna C-180 gained recognition when it was chosen by Geraldine Mock, the first woman to successfully fly around the world. The flight was made in 1964 in her 1953 C-180, the Spirit of Columbus (N1538C). After the epic flight, the Cessna factory obtained the aircraft and displayed it, suspended from the ceiling over one of the manufacturing lines. It is currently now on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington D.C.

  • StevensAero - Corben Baby Ace Laser-cut, micro RC kit

Fall 2014 (October) Micro Builder Program model

    Background:

No other form of aviation can equal the experience of flying open cockpit in helmet and goggles.  The year was 1928 and the Baby Ace is introduced to the aspiring pilot of average means, by Orland G. Corben.  The introduction of the Baby Ace comes well in advance of the likes of Cessna, Piper, or even the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association).  This inexpensive, quick building, and easy to fly airplane is a helmet and goggle flyer's delight.

December 7, 1941 - Japan bombs Pearl Harbor and the United States is at war with the Axis powers.  The demand for pilots to serve in WWII shifts the consumers focus away from home building and a year later (1942) the Corben Sport Plane Company ceases operation.

After returning from Korea in 1953 EAA founder and homebuilt enthusiast Paul Poberenzy purchased the assets to the Corben Sport Plane Company and presents and updated Baby Ace Model C as a three-part build article in the 1955 Mechanix Illustrated.  The article ignites a renewed interest in home-built aircraft and sets the stage for the founding of one of the worlds largest aviation organizations.  Experimental aviation and the modern homebuilt movement explodes.  Sources: Corben Sport Planes Museum.  EAA

This quarters micro builder program model was inspired by these two great American aviation pioneers, and though they are no longer with us they have ignited a passion for flight in our wonder years that burns to this day.

Our version of the subject, Baby Ace UM, was developed as an approachable build project and is easily completed in several evenings by those entry level builders looking to give their first scale subject a try.  The Baby Ace UM accepts popular micro electronics from ParkZone and E-Flite, and while other micro electronics packages can be retrofit we suggest outfitting the model as designed.   The Baby Ace UM is controlled via three channels (Rudder/Elevator/Throttle) and is positively stable in both pitch and roll making it a suitable model for those in search of a relaxing model to pilot around the weed patch.  Each Baby Ace UM micro indoor electric RC kit is thoughtfully manufactured in Colorado, U.S.A. from hand sorted AAA grade balsa sourced through state side mills and backed with a comprehensive hardware package, step-by-step photo illustrated instruction manual, and the best design know how in the kit manufacturing business.  Stevens AeroModel is committed to your success in aeromodeling and we believe the Baby Ace UM to be an ideal entry into the world of scale micro indoor radio control.  So grab your little ace, grand child, or neighbor and together build this delightful classic today.  Build It!

  • StevensAero - Fokker D.VII, laser-cut micro RC kit

The Fokker D.VII’s docile flight manners and agile performance are sure to bring excitement to morning “dawn patrols”, or as a worthy opponent to our micro SE5a, as you relive the aerial dogfights of the Great War in your local gym, or your favorite flying site.

    Background:

The Fokker D.VII was designed by Fokker’s prolific designer Reinhold Platz. Germany produced around 3,300 examples of the D.VII in the summer and autumn of 1918. The D.VII quickly proved to be a very formidable aircraft. In fact the armistice ending the war in 1918 specifically required that Germany surrender all it’s D.VII aircraft to the Allies at the conclusion of hostilities.

The D.VII entered service in early May 1918. Allied fighter pilots underestimated the new German fighter because of its squarish and ungainly appearance, but quickly revised their view as the D.VII began to mount up victories.

Flown by German aces such as Erich Lowenhart, Ernest Udet, and Herman Goring, among others, the Fokker D.VII earned a reputation as a top fighter aircraft. It was said that the airplane could make a poor pilot good, and a good pilot an ace.

After the war the D.VII saw service with a number of countries including Belgium, Denmark, Poland, the Netherlands, Finland, the Soviet Union, and the United States as well as many others. The Fokker D.VII was operational with the Swiss Air Force into the early 1930’s.

  • StevensAero - microMAX 103 Laser Cut, Micro RC Kit

Summer 2013 (July) Micro Builder Program Model.

Introducing microMAX, This quarter we were inspired to capture the simple lines, easy construction, and delightful performance of the MiniMax, a popular part 103 legal home built.. The microMAX, offered by Stevens AeroModel is a refreshing change of pace from previous quarter's more complex micro builds and features generous wing area and delightful handling.

    Background:

The Team Mini Max was designed by Wayne Ison and marketed through TEAM aircraft. This highly successful mid-wing strut braced single seat rag wing design found favor among many home builders. TEAM eventually folded but the design lives on and has shuffled around from business to business (currently being sold through www.teammini-max.com). We decided to model the older three-view as published in Bill Hannan's Peanuts & Pistachios resource and it should be noted that this three view deviates somewhat from current full scale production. We chose to keep these deviations as they lend a unique "Space Man Spiff" look to the aircraft.... and being a home built design, there's great variance in the completed airframe as each builder offers their unique twist on finishing items such as cowl, wing tips, and empennage.

    Kit Includes:

    • Precision laser cut parts
    • Full size plan set
    • Photo illustrated step-by-step assembly instructions
    • Hardware package including push-rods, control horns, gear struts, pre-cut acetate wind screen, and wheels.

  • StevensAero - Stinson 105 Laser Cut, Micro RC Kit

Fall 2015 (October) Micro Builder Program Model

    Background:

The Stinson Aircraft Company was founded in 1920 by famed aviator Edward “Eddie” Stinson. In 1925, Stinson moved aircraft production from Dayton, Ohio to Detroit, Michigan, at the site where Detroit’s Metropolitan Wayne County Airport is located. Always an aviator at heart, Stinson flew as a stunt pilot, earning a staggering, at the time, $100,000 a year. Sadly, he did not live to see the success of his company. He was killed in a plane crash on January 26,1932.

One of the most popular aircraft that the Stinson Aircraft Company produced was the Model 105. The Model 105 was Stinson’s first light aircraft. Introduced in 1939, the Stinson Company was hard pressed to meet the demand for this popular aircraft. Costing $2,995, the three-seat Model 105 was a strut-braced, high-wing monoplane, powered by either a 75 hp Continental A-75 engine, or the 80 hp Continental A-80-6. The aircraft also featured such innovations as a slotted wing to improve slow speed handling, and a luxurious cabin. Many notable aviation-minded people owned one, including Hollywood stars such as Edward Bergen, James Stewart, and billionaire playboy Howard Hughes.

At the outbreak of the Second World War some Stinson 105s were commandeered for use by the military. They proved so successful that the aircraft was redesigned to become the L-5 Sentinel, the last of which were retired from active service in the U.S. Air Force in 1955.
